Okami Mukae is held every year on December 1 at Kotai Jingu Shrine in Uonuma, Niigata Prefecture, about a 5-minute walk from Echigo-Horinouchi Station on the JR Joetsu Line. It is a traditional event that welcomes back to this area, after one month, the deity sent to Izumo Taisha Shrine on November 1 during Okami Okuri. Held on the same date each year, it is familiar as an annual event in the Uonuma region. On the day, open-air stalls line the shrine grounds and the approach, and the streets bustle with people from nearby towns and villages buying winter household goods. As an event announcing the arrival of winter in Uonuma, this tradition closely tied to daily life continues to be passed down today.
