Hikiyama Hohyo Matsuri is a spring festival of Noto Ikunitama Hiko Shrine (Keta Hongu Shrine) held in six neighborhoods in western Nanao City, Ishikawa Prefecture: Yonemachi, Aramachi, Kameyama-machi, Ipponsugi-machi, Kimachi, and Ikoma-machi. It is also known as Chonko Yama, a name derived from chonkoi, the local dialect word for "small." The name comes from the fact that the yamaboko (festival floats) are smaller than the Deka Yama of the Aohaku Matsuri. At the festival, six Gion-style yamaboko are dedicated from the six neighborhoods, and many children pull the floats through the streets to the accompaniment of hayashi music played on gongs, drums, and other instruments. The sight of the children taking the lead in pulling the floats around is heartwarming, and the event plays an important role in passing the local tradition on to the next generation.
