Ninen-mode is a festival held at Kitamuki Kannon in Ueda City, Nagano Prefecture. It takes place every year from January 1 to January 3, and is characterized by the "ninen-mode" (two-year visit) from New Year's Day through January 2; together with the "joya no kane" (New Year's Eve bell) from New Year's Eve into New Year's Day, it draws many worshippers. This festival originates from the faith in Kitamuki Kannon as the guardian deity of Bessho Onsen, and has become established as an event to pray for good health and family safety throughout the year. Highlights include amazake served in the temple grounds from early on New Year's Day, the distribution of charms and amulets, and the bustling scene of New Year's visitors.
