Narutaki no Daikon-taki is held every year on December 9 and 10 at Ryotoku Temple in Narutaki Honmachi, Ukyo Ward, Kyoto. It is an annual event in which daikon radish is served to worshippers during the temple's Ho-onko memorial service. Several thousand aokubi daikon (Shino daikon) from Shino-cho, Kameoka are used; preparation begins the day before with the service of followers, and from early morning the radish is cooked in large pots and distributed. Eating this daikon is said to prevent palsy, and the image of Shinran Shonin enshrined in the main hall is offered the traditional salt-flavored daikon-taki. This event, which also became a seasonal topic in haiku, continues to convey the traditional form of the Ho-onko service at a Kyoto temple in the twelfth month.
