Every year on March 3, Nagashibina is held at Shimogamo Shrine in Kyoto. It is an ancient traditional Shinto ritual in which people pray for the healthy growth of children, transfer misfortune to hina dolls, and set them adrift on the Mitarashi River. This event has been passed down for a long time as a rite wishing for good health. By transferring calamity to a doll and washing it away in pure water, it carries the meaning of purifying impurity and welcoming new life. The highlight is the sight of men and women dressed as hina dolls in Heian-period court attire, placing the dolls on small straw boats and floating them down the Mitarashi River as an offering. In the solemn atmosphere that conveys the arrival of spring, Kyoto's old and good traditions still live on today.
