The Mikawa Isshiki Odai-Chochin Matsuri is held at Isshiki Suwa Shrine in Nishio, Aichi Prefecture, and is the shrine's annual festival with more than 450 years of history. The large lanterns used in the festival are designated as a tangible folk cultural property of Aichi Prefecture, and they keep alive traditional techniques passed down in the region. Six sets of twelve giant lanterns, each 6 to 10 meters tall, stand in the shrine grounds, floating swaying against the pitch-black night sky from dusk. The lanterns are painted with historical picture scrolls depicting myths and history, enveloping visitors in a fantastical atmosphere. The festival is held over two days in late August. On the first day, the raising of the large lanterns, a lantern offering ceremony, and a kagura performance are held; on the second day, the annual rite and the lowering of the lanterns take place. Throughout both days, uchi-komi daiko drumming is performed at various times, and on the morning of the second day, a dedicatory archery contest is also held.
