At Oyamazumi Shrine on Omishima in Imabari, Ehime Prefecture, the Nukiho Festival is held every year on the ninth day of the ninth month of the old lunar calendar. Also called Shinokusa Festival, it is a harvest festival known as a rite celebrating the rice harvest. In a format similar to the Otaue Festival, three mikoshi (portable shrines) are carried in procession to the Gosajiki Hall at the Saidensai site, where the rituals are performed solemnly. A distinctive event is the hitotsu-zumo (one-man sumo) offered at Ichiryokusan. It is an offering in which a person wrestles with the unseen spirit of the rice, and it is currently designated an intangible folk cultural property of Ehime Prefecture.
Getting there
About 60 minutes by bus from JR Imabari Station, get off at Oyamazumi Shrine-mae and it is immediately there. Alternatively, about 5 minutes by car from Omishima IC on the Nishiseto Expressway.
