The "Christmas Shimai Tenjin Omishikinugui-shiki" is an event held at Chion-in Temple in Kyoto City, Kyoto Prefecture. This rite takes place every year on December 25 (Christmas) at the Tenjin Shrine (dedicated to Sugawara no Michizane) within the Chion-in grounds. By origin, it is a Shinto ritual to purify the goshintai (sacred body) of Tenjin at year's end, removing the year's impurities and preparing to welcome the new year. The highlight is the solemn ceremony in which priests in white robes carefully wipe the goshintai clean, while worshippers watch the sacred proceedings and pray for good health and success in their studies. Because it is held on Christmas, it is also known as a unique event blending Japanese and Western elements.
