At Kitano Tenmangu Shrine in Kamigyo Ward, Kyoto City, Kyoto Prefecture, the Fudehajime Festival (Tenman Sho) is held from January 2 to 4. As a New Year event at Kitano Tenmangu, known for prayers for success in exams, it draws especially large crowds. The festival originates from the fact that the enshrined deity Sugawara no Michizane was also famous as a calligrapher. Its distinguishing feature is that participants write their first calligraphy of the year before the deity Tenjin and pray for improvement in calligraphy. During the period, visitors can dedicate their first calligraphy at Kitano Tenmangu, and the dedicated works are displayed from late January. It is accessible from the city bus stop Kitano Tenmangu-mae.
