Kitano Baika-sai is a festival held every year on February 25 at Kitano Tenmangu Shrine in Kyoto City, Kyoto Prefecture. On this day, the anniversary of the death of the enshrined deity Sugawara no Michizane, a ceremony is held in the main hall offering 'Baika Gokū' (plum blossom offerings) to ward off misfortune, in remembrance of Michizane, who loved plum blossoms deeply. The origin of this festival dates back to the Kitano Grand Tea Gathering hosted by Toyotomi Hideyoshi. In the shrine's plum grove, outdoor tea ceremony seats are set up, and geisha and maiko from Kamishichiken perform tea ceremony. The paid tea ceremony ticket includes admission to the treasure hall, and special viewings are also held. On this day, the monthly fair 'Tenjin-ichi' also takes place, and the shrine is crowded with many visitors.
