Kibune Festival is the most important annual rite at Kibune Shrine in Kyoto City, Kyoto Prefecture. Located at the source of the Kamo River, the shrine has long been worshipped as a water deity governing rain and its cessation. Viewing is free. The festival begins in the morning with a Shinto ritual at the main shrine. In the afternoon, a mikoshi (portable shrine) procession parades through the parishioner districts, and following a ceremony at the inner shrine, there is a thousand-fold pilgrimage to the sacred "boat-shaped stone." Finally, Izumo kagura reenacting the myth of the slaying of Yamata no Orochi is offered, creating a moment that evokes the world of myth.
Getting there
Get off at Eizan Electric Railway's Kibuneguchi Station, then walk about 30 minutes. Alternatively, get off at Kyoto Bus's Kibune stop, then walk about 5 minutes.
