At Daikaku-ji, the former Saga Imperial Palace and head temple in Kyoto, Kyoto Prefecture, a moon-viewing evening called Kangetsu no Yube is held on long autumn nights. Set around Osawa Pond, it is known as a moon-viewing event that carries on the elegance of the Heian period. The festival originates from the story of Emperor Saga boating on Osawa Pond with cultural figures and nobles. Under the clear early-autumn night sky, visitors admire the moon while recalling the scenes of that time. On the day, dragon-headed boats (ryuto gekishusen) are floated on the pond, creating a graceful evening atmosphere. Boarding requires a special ticket (advance lottery reservation). In 2025 it will be held from October 4 to 6, from 17:30 to 21:00 (reception ends at 20:30). Contents may change due to circumstances or weather.
