The Kanazawa Hyakumangoku Matsuri, held every June in Kanazawa, Ishikawa Prefecture, commemorates the entry of Maeda Toshiie, founder of the Kaga domain, into Kanazawa Castle. It is Kanazawa's largest annual event, centered in the city's downtown area, and draws many tourists from Japan and abroad. The festival's highlight is the Hyakumangoku Gyoretsu, a grand parade that starts in front of the Tsuzumimon gate at the east plaza of Kanazawa Station and lasts about four hours until it enters Kanazawa Castle through the Ishikawa Gate. Each year, a famous actor portrays Maeda Toshiie, and the procession includes a Kaga lion dance parade designated as a national cultural property, a brave Kaga tobi procession, and warrior parades, among others, thrilling spectators along the route.
