The Juyokka Toshikoshi Hadaka Mairi (Fourteenth-Day New Year Naked Pilgrimage) at Kyojo Temple in Morioka, Iwate Prefecture, is a traditional event of the Little New Year (koshogatsu). Men stripped to the waist with shimenawa (sacred straw rope) wrapped around their hips parade through the streets, praying for a good harvest, good health, and protection from misfortune. A custom dating back to the feudal domain era, it is known for its harsh ascetic practice carried out in the cold wind. Participants purify themselves by pouring water over their bodies and set out from Kyojo Temple to walk through the surrounding area. What draws spectators is the sight of these men in the bitter cold and their earnest prayers for the safety of the community.
Getting there
About 10 minutes by bus from Morioka Station, get off at Morioka Hachimangu-mae. Or about 25 minutes on foot from the station.
