On January 3, the Hayachine Kagura (Take Kagura) Dance Beginning is held at the Hayachine Shrine assembly hall in Osako Town, Hanamaki City, Iwate Prefecture. This traditional event offers the bold Take Kagura as a New Year celebration, and can be viewed free of charge from 13:00 to 16:00. This kagura, along with Omodaka Kagura, was designated as a nationally important intangible folk cultural property (No. 1) in 1976 under the name "Hayachine Kagura," and in September 2009 it was also registered as a UNESCO intangible cultural heritage. It is a precious performing art. The highlight is the bold Take Kagura dance performed at the Hayachine Shrine assembly hall. Visitors can see this traditional offering welcoming the New Year up close.
Getting there
From JR Hanamaki Station, take the Iwate Kenkotsu bus bound for Osako for about 40 minutes, get off at Uchikawame, and walk immediately. Alternatively, about 25 minutes by car from the Tohoku Expressway Hanamaki IC. Free parking available.
