Tori no Ichi is held at Chokokuji Temple (the "Tori no Tera") in Asakusa, Taito Ward, Tokyo, on the Days of the Rooster in November, a yearly event dating back to the Edo period. It is a festival for praying for good fortune and business prosperity, and the Asakusa venue is the largest in Tokyo, drawing crowds of worshippers. Since Edo times it has been established as an occasion to give thanks for a safe year and wish for good fortune in the coming year. In Asakusa it is held mainly at Chokokuji Temple, and similar festivals are held at Otori Shrines and Washitori Shrines nationwide. Enjoying the visit includes buying auspicious kumade (decorated bamboo rakes) and charms, and eating at the food stalls. At Chokokuji Temple, those who receive a special prayer are given, to the first arrivals, a kawarake, an unglazed clay plate on which the head priest grinds ink with water from the water deity and brushes the zodiac animal of the coming year.

Getting there

About 15 minutes on foot from Tawaramachi Station on the Tokyo Metro Ginza Line, or about 12 minutes on foot from Asakusa Station on the Tsukuba Express. There is little parking around the venue, so use of public transportation is recommended.
