At Jindaiji, a Tendai Buddhist temple of special head temple status in Chofu City, Tokyo, the Yakuyoke Gansandaishi Taisai and the Daruma Market are held every year on March 3 and 4. Known as Jindaiji's largest event, the temple grounds host around 300 shops, mainly stalls selling auspicious daruma dolls of various sizes, and it is counted as one of Japan's three great daruma markets. Jindaiji is known as Japan's largest yakuyoke daishi (evil-averting master), and at the Gansandaishi Hall, goma prayers are held every day. At the March grand festival, prayers for protection from evil based on faith in Gansandaishi and the market of auspicious daruma dolls are held together. The highlights are the auspicious daruma market with about 300 shops lining up and the grand festival, which is Jindaiji's largest Buddhist ceremony. Worshippers seek auspicious items at the shops in the temple grounds, and the area bustles with many people.
