The Jindaiji Oni Lantern Festival is a summer festival held at Jindaiji in Chofu City, Tokyo, over three days around July 20 each year. It is organized by the Jindaiji Oni Lantern Festival Executive Committee, and vivid orange ground cherries, arranged to resemble lanterns, line the temple grounds and the approach, making it a summer tradition at Jindaiji for welcoming the spirits of the dead. The festival is held in conjunction with the memorial days of Jinsha Daio and Enmei Kannon. It began mainly as the Jindaiji Ground Cherry Market and reached its seventh edition in 2015. After the Great East Japan Earthquake, the executive committee has planned various programs, including a Tohoku reconstruction support product fair and 3.11 storyteller talk events. Highlights include the ground cherry market, as well as a handmade market with cloth accessories and woodwork, and performances such as freestyle lifting. Visitors can also enjoy the Oni Lantern arch "Happy Gate" at the temple gate, "Oniko uchiwa" fans on which monks write Sanskrit characters, and street food such as soba manju and Jindaiji soba. There is no parking lot, so access is generally by bus from Chofu Station or Tsutsujigaoka Station on the Keio Line.

Getting there

From Chofu Station or Tsutsujigaoka Station, take a Keio bus to Jindaiji and walk 1 minute. Buses are also available from Kichijoji Station and Mitaka Station.
