The Hono Kemari Tournament is a traditional event held at Kotohira Shrine (Konpira-san) in Kotohira, Kagawa Prefecture. Kemari is a game that was popular among aristocrats during the Heian period, in which players kick a ball to one another and keep it in the air without letting it drop. In this tournament, participants demonstrate graceful techniques to the accompaniment of gagaku music. Highlights include a demonstration by members of the Kemari Preservation Society in splendid costumes, and the sounds of flutes and drums echoing through the shrine grounds. General participation may be possible in some cases, making this a valuable opportunity to experience traditional Japanese culture.
