The Hibatashi Festival is a summer tradition held at Oizumiyama in Chino, Nagano. Its origins date back to the Edo period, when villagers are said to have lit bonfires to give thanks to the mountain deity and pray for a good harvest. The highlight is the "fire writing," in which torches arranged to form characters and pictures on the mountainside are lit all at once; the scene rising against the night sky captivates visitors. Traditional dances and drum performances by local residents are also presented.
