Heian Shrine's New Year's Day Festival is a New Year rite held every year on January 1 at Heian Shrine in Kyoto, Kyoto Prefecture. In the early morning of New Year's Day, priests draw and purify wakamizu (the first water drawn of the year) in the Wakamizu Shinji, and New Year offerings are made before the gods at the start of the year. The centerpiece of the festival is the Shinshun Hono Noh, in which noh is performed as an offering, celebrating the New Year in a solemn atmosphere. General worshippers can also attend along with their first shrine visit of the year, and experience a fresh start to the year in the shrine's vast grounds.
Getting there
Get off at Higashiyama Station on the Tozai Subway Line, about 10 minutes on foot. Get off at the Kyoto City Bus stop Kumano Shrine-mae or Higashiyama Niomon, about 5 minutes on foot.
