Hayachine Shrine Sominsai, held every year on March 17 at Hayachine Shrine in Osako, Hanamaki City, Iwate Prefecture, is a festival known for its fierce scramble for a bag. Reception begins at 10:00 on the day, Shinto rituals are performed at 11:00, and original rites unfold in the shrine grounds until around noon. The highlight is the Somin-bukuro Scramble. The somin bag contains 365 pieces marked with the twelve zodiac signs, and men push their way down the approach while struggling fiercely over the bag. The pieces are given to the person who lastly holds the mouth of the bag, a powerful event unique to Hayachine Shrine.
