Hatsudaishi Hatsukobo, held on January 21 at Toji Temple in Kyoto, Kyoto Prefecture, is a traditional event known as the first Kobo market of the year. Corresponding to the monthly death anniversary of Kobo Daishi, stalls line the temple grounds under the organization of the Toji Shutten Unei Committee. On this day a Mieku ceremony is held, and the tradition continues of a market opening throughout the temple grounds along with the ceremony. As many as 1000 stalls selling antiques, local specialties, plants, gardening goods, ceramics, and more stand in a row, and the crowds are larger than at the monthly fair. It runs from 8:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. and is familiar as a New Year scene in Kyoto.
