Hatsutenjin, held at Kitano Tenmangu in Kamigyo Ward, Kyoto, around January 25 each year, is a traditional event marking the first temple-fair day of the new year. The shrine, a short walk from the Kyoto City Bus stop Kitano Tenmangu-mae, welcomes worshippers from around 6:00 a.m. until around 9:00 p.m. Roughly a thousand stalls line the grounds in a typical year, giving the precinct a lively bustle at the start of the year. An exhibition of votive calligraphy (kakizome) is also held, and from sunset the shrine buildings are lit up, making evening worship possible as well.
