The Spring Fujiwara Festival is a regular spring event in Hiraizumi Town, Iwate Prefecture, organized by the Hiraizumi Tourism Association. In Reiwa 8 (2026) it will be held from May 1 to 5, with venues including Chusonji Temple and Motsuji Temple as well as locations throughout Hiraizumi Town. A highlight, the Minamoto no Yoshitsune Kō Tōka Gyōretsu (Procession of Lord Minamoto no Yoshitsune Heading East), reenacts the scene in which Minamoto no Yoshitsune and his retainers, pursued by his brother Yoritomo, arrived in Hiraizumi and were welcomed by Fujiwara no Hidehira. It is held every year on May 3; actors playing Hidehira, Yoshitsune, Kitano-kata and others ride horses or ox-drawn carts, accompanied by warrior retinues such as Benkei and waiting attendants, and parade from Motsuji Temple to Chusonji Temple.
Getting there
The nearest station is JR Hiraizumi Station. Only on May 3, a free shuttle bus runs from the Hiraizumi Smart IC parking lot to Hiraizumi Junior High School (it does not go to Chusonji Temple). Use paid parking lots in town or free temporary parking lots. On May 3 there are traffic restrictions, and detouring to the National Route 4 bypass is recommended.
