Hadaka-mairi (the naked pilgrimage) at Karasuyado Shrine in Hita, Oita Prefecture, is an unusual festival with about 400 years of history. Every year on the night of Setsubun, men wearing nothing but white fundoshi (loincloths) gather at the shrine and pray for protection from evil and good health. The sight of them clashing vigorously while the event is carried out in a sacred atmosphere is the highlight.
