The Wakamiya Hachimangu Autumn Grand Festival and Naked Festival, held in late November in Bungotakada, Oita Prefecture, is a traditional event with 940 years of history and is known as one of Japan's three great naked festivals. In this festival, for which Wakamiya Hachimangu Shrine is the tutelary shrine, the yotō of the Riku-gumi and Kawa-gumi groups carry a mikoshi (portable shrine) weighing about 1 ton and parade through the city. On the first day, the "O-sagari," the mikoshi is carried from the main shrine to the lower shrine, and on the final day, the "O-nobori," it is carried from the lower shrine back to the main shrine. The scene in which the men of the Kawa-gumi cross the Katsura River wearing hanya straps and fundoshi is especially famous, and amid the burning of the roughly 16-meter-long, roughly 5-ton "Bungo Otaimatsu" set alight by fire arrows shot from Otama Bridge, the sight of them carrying the mikoshi through the early-winter river is the festival's greatest highlight.
