Held every year on May 5, Children's Day, in Kusu, Oita Prefecture, the Japanese Fairy Tale Festival is an event for children taking place at two venues: Mishima Park and the Kusu River riverbed. Starting in 1950, the festival honors the work of storyteller Takehiko Kurushima, a native of the town known as Japan's Andersen. At the Mishima venue, visitors pass through a 35-meter red carp, while at the riverbed venue they pass through a 60-meter black carp, and a 55-meter blue carp swims in the sky. There are puppet shows, picture-card storytelling, woodworking classes, a children's drum festival, and fish catching, among many other activities families can enjoy.
Getting there
About 10 minutes on foot from Bungo-Mori Station on the JR Kyudai Line (Mishima Park venue), or about 5 minutes by taxi (Kusu River riverbed venue). By car, about 5 minutes from Kusu IC on the Oita Expressway.
