The Gion Kabu-kai School Opening Ceremony is an event held as part of the Gion Festival, a rite at Yasaka Shrine in Kyoto, Kyoto Prefecture. The Gion Festival runs for a month, from July 1 to July 31, and is known for the yamaboko (festival float) procession and the eve-of-festival evenings called Yoiyama. This "opening ceremony" is a rite marking the start of preparations and practice for pulling the yamaboko during the Gion Festival; children and those involved from each yamaboko town gather, and it is a place where they learn the mindset and deportment for the festival. In particular, one can see children selling charms while singing warabe uta (traditional children's songs). Through these traditional events, the culture of the Gion Festival is passed on to the next generation.
