土用の丑の日御手洗祭

The Mitarai Festival at Shimogamo Shrine (Kamo Mioya Shrine) is known as a summer tradition in Kyoto. Held every year on the day of the ox during the doyo period, participants join the ritual by offering a 500 yen light-offering fee. Soaking one's feet in the Mitarai Pond is said to purify sins and impurity and to bring the benefit of warding off epidemics. In the central "foot-soaking ritual," participants hold a lit candle and proceed slowly while entering the Mitarai Pond up to below the knees. After dedicating the light at Inoue Shrine, a subordinate shrine, they step out of the pond and receive sacred water.
