The Daigokuden Festival is held in Muko, Kyoto Prefecture, to commemorate the transfer of the capital from Heijo-kyo to Nagaoka-kyo. At the venue, the Otokuni Kendo Dojo in Muko-cho, Muko City, local residents gather and reflect on a time more than 1,200 years ago. The move of the capital to Nagaoka-kyo was highly significant as a relocation of the capital in ancient Japanese history, and this festival serves as an occasion to pass on that history to the present. Shinto priests perform a ceremony, and participants remember the appearance of the capital at that time and engage with a past deeply rooted in the region.
