The Funahiki Festival and Miko Mai at Banda Shrine in Banda, Fukushima Prefecture, are traditional events passed down in the local community, held every spring. The festival centers on the Funahiki Festival, in which wooden boats loaded with rice bales are pulled against each other to divine that year's harvest, and the Miko Mai, in which girls dedicate ancient-style dances at Banda Shrine. The highlights of the festival are the Funahiki Festival from 2:00 p.m. and the Miko Mai and Myojin Mai from 12:40 p.m. In the Funahiki Festival, participants are lent work clothes and given yellow tenugui (hand towels), so they can join casually. In addition to the Miko Mai, the Myojin Mai, revived last year, is also performed. At 1:45 p.m., a performance by the Banda Myojin Taiko is also held (cancelled in stormy weather).
