Rooms around Yanaizu, Fukushima fill up while the festival is on.
The Nanokado Hadaka Mairi is held every year on January 7 in Yanaizu Town, Kawanuma District, Fukushima Prefecture, at Enzo Temple, home of the Fukuman Kokuzo Bosatsu. The festival begins at 8:30 p.m., and its main event is men wearing only loincloths climbing the hemp rope in the temple's main hall, struggling upward toward the large waniguchi (metal gong). It is a festival for praying for happiness and good health in the coming year, and is marked by the harshness of taking on the cold winter night with a bare body. Not only can it be watched, but participation by the general public is also possible.
