Atsuta Matsuri (Shobu-sai) is the most important regular festival held at Atsuta Shrine in Nagoya, Aichi Prefecture. An imperial messenger dispatched by the Emperor attends, and the atmosphere is formal and solemn. Widely familiar to residents as a festival announcing the arrival of summer, it features martial arts and performing arts normally not seen on the shrine grounds, offered in dedication. It is the central event of the festival, allowing visitors to experience Atsuta Shrine's traditions up close. In the evening, dedication lanterns are lit, and at night about 1,000 fireworks are launched from Jingu Park. The solemn atmosphere of the daytime and the lively spectacle of the night entertain visitors.
Getting there
Get off at Meitetsu Jingumae Station, 3 minutes on foot. By car, about 10 minutes from the Nagoya Expressway Route 3 Odaka Line Hotta IC or Yobitsugi IC; parking available (400 regular cars, free).
