Anjo no Ningyo Shibai is a traditional performing art held in Anjo, Ago-cho, Shima City, Mie Prefecture, and is designated an Important Intangible Folk Cultural Property of Japan. Every year on January 2, it is performed as an offering at Niwa Beach and in front of Akiba Shrine. This puppet theater originates in the fishing community's faith, which prayed for safe navigation and satisfying catches, and has a history of about 400 years. Three puppets known as Sanbaso (Chitose, Okina, and Sanbaso) are used; the first and second are manipulated by one person each, while the Sanbaso is manipulated by two people. After being performed on Niwa Beach on the Pacific coast, it is also presented in front of the Benzaiten shrine on a hill facing Matoya Bay.
Getting there
The venue for Anjo no Ningyo Shibai is Niwa Beach and the area in front of Akiba Shrine in Anjo, Ago-cho. From Kintetsu Ugata Station, take the Mie Kotsu bus bound for Anjo for about 25 minutes, get off at Anjo, and walk immediately.
