The Yamaguchi Tanabata Chochin Matsuri is a traditional night festival held every year on August 6 and 7 in central Yamaguchi City's shopping district and at Yuda Onsen, and it dates back about 600 years to the Muromachi period. It began when people lit lights in tall bamboo lantern towers to pray for the repose of their ancestors during Obon, and today tens of thousands of red chochin (paper lanterns) are displayed, along with chochin yamagasa (lantern floats) and mikoshi (portable shrines).
Getting there
About 15 minutes on foot from JR Yamaguchi Station, or get off at the bus stop Yamaguchi City Center Shopping District, which is right there.
