Tashiro no Furyu is a traditional event held every year on December 8 in Tashiro, Kurogi-machi, Yame City, Fukuoka Prefecture. It originated about 240 years ago in the Edo period as a "furyu" (a type of festive performance) dedicated when Hachiryu Shrine was rebuilt, and it has been passed down to the present. Because the deity of Hachiryu Shrine is female, the procession is made up of men in male and female attire with faces painted white, who parade along with a mikoshi (portable shrine). A procession of about 50 people departs from a house called the "zamoto" and entertains onlookers with comical dances by clown roles, traditional recitations passed down through generations, and serving sake to spectators from gourds. Along the way, they also perform a feat of throwing and catching 4-meter-long spear-like poles called "keyari." After arriving at Hachiryu Shrine, a powerful dance and performance by drummers wearing shaguma (a type of headdress) are dedicated, and the festival ends.
