Tayugyo Tamaseseri is a traditional event held at Hakozaki Shrine in Fukuoka City, Fukuoka Prefecture. This festival prays for a bountiful harvest of the five grains, and features Tayugyo, which imitates rice-planting rituals, and Tamaseseri, in which balls are offered before the deity. Its history is old and is said to derive from myth, and it is deeply connected to the region's agriculture. The highlights are the Tayugyo, in which participants in white robes perform sacred gestures, and the powerful spectacle of Tamaseseri, in which people fiercely compete for a ball. It is held every year on January 3 and has also been designated a national important intangible folk cultural property.
Getting there
From JR Hakata Station, take the Nishitetsu Bus and get off at Hakozakigu-mae; it is immediately there. From Hakozakimiyamae Station on the Subway Hakozaki Line, it is a 5-minute walk.
