The Shiraito no Kan Misogi is a traditional event held every January at Kumano Shrine in Itoshima, Fukuoka Prefecture, in which participants enter cold river water to purify themselves. Various theories exist about its origin, but it has long been passed down as a Shinto ritual praying for good health and a bountiful harvest. The highlight is the valiant misogi (purification) performed in the severe cold; participants dress in white garments and proceed from Kumano Shrine to the Shiraito River. The sacred rite, performed with splashing water as local residents watch over, is worth seeing.
