Omagari no Tsunahiki (the Omagari tug-of-war) is held in Omagari, Daisen, Akita Prefecture, on the third Saturday of February each year. It is a koshogatsu (small New Year) event connected to Suwa Shrine and is a folk cultural property designated by Akita Prefecture. It has continued since the Kyoho era (around 1716-1736) and passes on the area's history to the present day. On the day, a large rope 75 hiro (136 m) long is brought down from Suwa Shrine, and the rope is paraded through the town with a saifuri-bo (ritual wand) at the head. Afterwards, at the Kami-Omachi intersection, several hundred people divided the city into Kamicho and Shimocho pull against each other; it is said that if Kamicho wins the price of rice rises, and if Shimocho wins the price of beans rises, divining that year's crop conditions. The rope joining takes place from around 5:30 p.m., fireworks are launched around 7:00 p.m., and the full-scale tug-of-war unfolds from around 8:30 p.m.
