The Namahage Sedo Festival is held at Shinzan Shrine in Oga, Akita Prefecture, every year on the Friday, Saturday, and Sunday that include the second Saturday of February. It is a tourism event combining the Shinto ritual Sedo-sai with the folk custom Namahage of Oga, held on the Oga Peninsula in winter. The highlight of the festival is the scene where namahage (folk figures in straw costumes) perform a dynamic dance in the light of a bonfire lit within the shrine grounds. The performance amid the flickering flames makes a strong impression on the attendees. The venue, Shinzan Shrine, is located in Kitaura, Oga, and can be reached in about 70 minutes by car from Akita Station, or in about 40 minutes by special paid bus from Oga Station. This festival, fusing a Shinto ritual and a folk custom, lets visitors experience Oga's winter tradition up close.
