Minakami, Gunma (Minakami Onsen) · Every year on 28 July
317 days to go
Rooms around Minakami, Gunma fill up while the festival is on.
The Oide Festival is held at Minakami Onsen in Minakami, Gunma Prefecture, and is cherished by the local community as an event unique to a hot spring town. The stars of the festival are the Oide Odori, a dance performed to rhythmic calls, and the mikoshi (portable shrine) procession that parades through the hot spring town. The name "Oide" carries the meaning of "hot water coming out," as in a hot spring, as well as a wish inviting people to "please come" to Minakami Onsen. Highlights include the Oide Odori, which creates a sense of unity at the venue, and the mikoshi procession, which departs JR Minakami Station at noon and heads into the hot spring town. As crowding around the station is expected on the day, visitors may want to allow extra time when coming to watch.
Getting there
A short walk from JR Minakami Station; the taxi stand or rotary is the mikoshi departure point. By car, about 10 minutes from the Minakami Interchange on the Kan-Etsu Expressway.
