In the Ohama district of Ohaku-machi, Hakata Ward, Fukuoka Prefecture, the Ohama Nagare Kanjo is held every year from August 24 to 26. It is a historic event passed down since the middle of the Edo period, known as the festival that closes out Hakata's summer festivals. In an area where the streetscape of the commercial city of Hakata, laid out under the Taiko land division, still remains, it carries on traditions from long ago. The highlight is the display of large lanterns by artists such as Ebisaki Sekkei, active from the Meiji era into the early Showa era. Lanterns painted with masterful warrior pictures are shown, conveying Hakata's culture of that time to the present. During the period, elaborately devised night stalls line up in rows, and a lively summer scene full of the warmth of the local community unfolds.
