At Nagata Shrine in Nagata Ward, Kobe City, Hyogo Prefecture, the Nagata Shrine Old-Style Tsuina Ritual is held each year around Setsubun. It is a Shinto ritual that has continued since the Muromachi period and is designated an important intangible folk cultural property of Hyogo Prefecture. Following the Setsubun festival, the old-style tsuina ritual is performed, and visitors may watch free of charge. The oni that appear in this ritual dance as messengers of the gods, purifying all calamities and praying for a fresh, good year to come. It has been a custom since ancient times for visitors to receive purification by having the ashes of the pine torches held by the oni sprinkled over them, and to hang the unburned remnants at the entrance of their homes to wish for the removal of misfortune and the invitation of good fortune. A tradition also continues of eating mochibana to pray for freedom from illness and disaster, household safety, and a peaceful year.
