Every year on April 29, the Kintai Bridge Festival is held around Kintai Bridge in Iwakuni City, Yamaguchi Prefecture. Organized by the Kintai Bridge Festival Executive Committee, it is a historical procession festival that can be enjoyed free of charge from 9:00 to 16:00. It goes ahead in light rain. The main attraction is a daimyo procession and yakko parade reenacting Edo-period sankin kotai travel across Kintai Bridge, creating a scene like a picture scroll of the era. In the surrounding area, there are also demonstrations by the Iwakuni Domain musket corps and performances of Iwakuni drums, among many other events. It is accessible by bus from JR Shin-Iwakuni Station and Iwakuni Station, and traffic restrictions are in place on the day.
Getting there
From JR Shin-Iwakuni Station, about 15 minutes by bus, get off at Kintai Bridge and it is immediately there. From JR Iwakuni Station, about 20 minutes by bus. About 10 minutes by car from Iwakuni IC on the Sanyo Expressway. Parking available (about 1,000 spaces, 300 yen per day).
