The Katsube Fire Festival, held at Katsube Shrine in Moriyama, Shiga Prefecture, is a traditional fire festival that has continued for about 800 years in prayer for good health and freedom from illness. Around 8 PM, large torches shaped like snake bodies are lit all at once. Young men aged 15 to 34, wearing loincloths, sound bells and drums and dance wildly around the flames with cries of "gouyo" and "hyouyo." The torches are made from alder, bamboo, rope, and rapeseed stalks, with the tips prepared on the morning of the day. From around 6 PM, the young men carry large drums through the town, and around 8 PM the torches gather at Katsube Shrine, bringing the festival to its climax. The venue is about a 10-minute walk from JR Moriyama Station.
