The Nagahama Bonsai Plum Exhibition is a New Year event held at Keiunkan in Nagahama City, Shiga Prefecture, from winter into spring each year, where visitors view potted plum trees (bonsai plum). From a collection of about 300 pots, roughly 90 are selected according to flowering time and lined up in a pure Japanese-style tatami room. Admission is 900 yen for high school students and older, and 400 yen for elementary and junior high school students. First held in 1952, this exhibition reaches its 75th edition in 2026 and is a seasonal sign of spring in Nagahama. Highlights include ancient trees said to be 400 years old and huge trees nearly 3 meters tall, bonsai plums of a size rarely seen elsewhere. During the period there is a special nighttime opening, where illuminated bonsai plums and bamboo lanterns create a magical atmosphere. In addition to a tea ceremony seat where visitors can enjoy tea while viewing the bonsai plums, a photo contest and a haiku contest are also held.
