The Ise Matsuri is held in Ise City, Mie Prefecture, every year from late September to early October. It is a citizens' festival organized by the Ise Omatsuri Steering Committee. Its predecessor was the Omatsuri, which was formed in 1895 by merging the kaishiki ceremonies that had been held in each town to coincide with the Kannamesai at Ise Jingu. In 2009 it was renamed to its current name, and it is now held on dates separated from the Kannamesai of the Jingu. The center of the festival is the citizens' parade and the operation of hoshieisha, but there are many other highlights as well. The Hatsuhoe, which began in 1972, offers the newly harvested grain of that year: by land-pulling to the Geku and by river-pulling along the Isuzu River to the Naiku. In addition, at the Kannamesai Hosaku Jigyo, dance groups gathered from around the country, including Awa Odori, Yosakoi Matsuri, and Eisa, give performances, and there are also events in which newly harvested grain from the local area is dedicated to the Jingu.
