The Iba no Sakashita-sai festival is held every year on May 4 at Suzumine Sanjinja Shrine in Iba-cho, Higashiomi, Shiga Prefecture. It is a Shinto ritual in which a mikoshi (portable shrine) is dragged down from the shrine on the mountainside to the large torii gate at the foot of the mountain. Known as one of Omi's strange festivals, it takes place from around noon to around 4 p.m. Young men of the shrine's parishioners carry the mikoshi down a steep cliff-like slope about 500 meters long. There are several difficult spots along the way, and the sight of the mikoshi being lowered amid the brave shouts of the young men is a thrilling highlight that keeps spectators on edge.
