The Funa Danjiri held in Kihoku, Mie Prefecture, is a traditional festival in which participants parade through the town pulling yamaboko (festival floats) shaped like fishing boats, praying for a bountiful catch and safety at sea. This festival has a history of more than 250 years, and in this area, where skipjack tuna pole-and-line fishing thrives, it has been passed down as an old custom wishing for the prosperity of the fishing industry. The highlight is the sight of people actually imitating skipjack tuna pole-and-line fishing on top of the floats. Along with the skipjack tuna, people parade while showing the motions of "pole-and-line fishing," expressing their gratitude to the sea and their passionate hopes for a bountiful catch.
